TOPIC: BOREDOM, Its Prevention and Treatment.

PREAMBLE: Boredom in its simplest term is said to be the act or situation where one gets bored of doing one thing over and over again leading to an uninteresting situation or circumstances.

When boredom sets in, there will be a demonstration of lack of interest or loss of interest in whatever one is doing or even lack of interest in living.

DEFINITION: Is the state of feeling bored, the quality of being very boring. And to be bored is to make someone feel bored, especially by talking too much.

CAUSES OF BOREDOM:

1.     Loss of interest

2.     Confusing instruction.

3.     Inadequate rest or nutrition.

4.     Low level of mental stimulation.

5.     Lack of choice or control over one’s daily activities.

6.     Lack of diversified recreational interests.

7.     Poor perception of time.

8.     Fear of making a mistake.

9.     Repetition of the activity for too much time.

10.                        Feeling unable to try new approaches to activities.

EEFECTS OF BOREDOM ON MENTAL HEALTH:

People highly prone to boredom perform poorly on task that require sustained attention and are more likely to show increased symptoms of both ADHD and anxiety.

Question: Give other effects of boredom on mental health you may know.

HOW TO PREVENT BOREDOM:

1.     By socializing.

2.     Get your compass straight.

3.     Add a new challenge.

4.     Learn to journal.

5.     Engage in mindfulness and meditation.

6.     Fill schedule holes.

7.     Cut off distraction.

8.     Put off your boredom.

9.     Become your own cheer leader.

10.                        Nuke procrastination.

11.                        Figure out what you really want to do.

HOW IS BOREDOM TREATED: There is no specific medical treatment for boredom, that means it boils down to “Talk therapy” which is part of the approaches in chaplaincy in meeting with need of CR.

However, there are tons of solutions for anyone who is experiencing boredom. For example, the individual may consider:

1.     Trying some new diversional activities.

2.     Joining a social group can be a good way to thwart boredom such as reading club, hobby groups or exercise are all great places to start.

3.     Joining a community group that organizes activities and outings.

4.     Talking to a professional for the needed counseling or guidance on what makes the person bored.

QUESTION 7: There is an age long adage which says, “prevention is better than cure,” what in your opinion is this adage trying to buttress?

QUESTION 8: What other preventive method would you suggest for boredom in addition to the listed above?
