Calling for the Declaration of a State of Emergency in Mental Health Sector

Mental health, beloved good people is of global concern requiring urgent attention of all and sundry, inclusive of government of the day, private individuals and corporate entities and finally mental health care professionals located all over the world.

Health is said to be wealth both of individual and of any nation. Good mental health guarantees healthy development of the citizenry leading to a sustainable development of all nations.

The present situations where we witness an astronomical increase in mental health issues, challenges and problems has become a great concern globally. For this and other reasons, world Federation of mental health had thought of the theme for this year’s mental health day celebration coming up on the 10th October year AD2022 to be very appropriate: “Making mental health to all, a global priority.”

Calling on all concerned globally to make mental health provision to all, a global priority. The pandemic surge has left behind for people in the world serious mental health challenges and with that of developing nations, especially Nigeria and the entire continent of Africa very traumatic, making many people to commit suicide or take other’s life at the slightest provocations.

Reasons for compounded mental health problems in Nigeria and continent of Africa is not farfetched from bad governance, economic hardship, unfavourable political climate, insecurity, unending labour unrest, unresolved conflict or dispute between university lecturers and government at the center, consumption of hard drugs and substance abuse amongst the youths and women.

With these reasons as stated above, I wish to renew my calling and advocacy for the declaration of state of emergency in mental health sector. Government have their own roles to play by putting in place legal framework for mental health care.

Private individuals and corporate entities also have their roles while mental health professionals also have theirs as well.

Let all of us come together to make mental health care provision to all and sundry become a reality and a priority in our own time. God bless you all.
