Association of Professional Chaplains in Nigeria and Continent of Africa

Association of Professional Chaplains in Nigeria and Continent of Africa
The proactiveness of the President-General in the person of The Most Rev’d Chap. Prof. Mike David must be appreciated for the inclusion of military, police and other law enforcement chaplains called para-military chaplains in the scheme of things in the association (APCIN). Let me say it here loud and clear that there is a place for:-
1.     Military chaplains (Army chaplains, Navy chaplains, Airforce chaplains) in APCIN as chaplains serving in the military who are interested in becoming certified chaplains as they remain serving in the military. They are opportune to approach APCIN for certification as members of the professional association.
2.     Law enforcement chaplains, sometimes called para-military. These chaplains may be serving in following agencies as para-military organization –police, Nigeria security and civil defence corps, prison (correctional facility), custom, etc.
These chaplains also have opportunity to be members of the professional association and have the right to approach the association for certification as certified chaplains as they serve in their various agencies or organizations provided they satisfy the certification requirements.
Prescribed uniforms for chaplains in the military and paramilitary remains the rights of the military and paramilitary authorities. Chaplains have the right to wear prescribed uniforms of their organization or formation.
These chaplains however will be expected to put on the lanyard and individual ID cards of those chaplains on duty.
NB: Whether these chaplains are with us now or not is immaterial as their spaces are reserved for them in APCIN.

What Lessons have WE Learnt from Corona Virus (Covid 19) Pandemic?

What Lessons have WE Learnt from Corona Virus (Covid 19) Pandemic?
The corona virus pandemic has actually created a window of opportunities for us to learn some new things. Permit me to point to a few of those things we have learned, and be kind enough to offer some more in addition to what I have enumerated as no one has monopoly of knowledge.
1.     The pandemic has actually taught us that all powers belong to the Creator God.
2.     That there is a need for unified worship and appreciation of Almighty God as from the very beginning.
3.     That world powers may crumble or power changing hands but the power of Almighty God remains unchanging and yet superior to all powers.
4.     That the Almighty God is the Ultimate power both in the heavenlies as well as on the planet earth.
5.     That mankind is deceptive and must not be trusted, instead our trust and confidence must be in God our Creator.
6.     That there is no better place than home, all our leaders who used to run outside for medical treatment have been forced to seek treatment within the nation which has now lead to the development and equipment of home health facilities.
7.     The pandemic has been able to teach us that in emergencies, every nation, association, group, professions and professionals will take responsibilities for their own people and their wellbeing.
8.     That home grown professionals are better resources to go to battle with in combatting any emergency.
9.     The pandemic which brought to s lockdown, has also opened our eyes to the importance of family units and what family units are.
10.                        That the world economy may crumble with the world going into recession, but God’s economy cannot falter nor crumble.
11.                        That there is always a need for preparation ahead of time, which teaches us to always be proactive in taking, strategizing and planning in our actions ahead of time.
12.                        That there is always a need to keep on researching into things, learning new things at all times, never waiting for eventualities before looking for the way out.
Become a prime mover, reject stagnation and passivity. God bless you all.

Generalists and Specialists, Who are they?

Generalists and Specialists, Who are they?

Generalists: Generalists are knowledgeable well trained professionals who are non-specialists but are qualified to handle general issues and problems related to the particular profession, doing a little here and there. They are qualified professionals, they are not quacks, only that they are non-specialists.
In medical practice such generalists are called General Practioners (GP) who are qualified to engage in general medical practices only.
Likewise in chaplaincy profession, generalists are professional chaplains who are known as General Chaplaincy Practioners (GCP), qualified and knowledgeable to handle general issues and problems related to chaplaincy practice and spiritual care provision. They are however not quacks but also non-specialists.
Specialists: Specialists are professionals who have specialized in one or two field of studies or area in a particular given profession and have become specialist professionals in their areas of specializations and fields. Specialist usually attain such enviable positions after a higher or specialized professional studies and training.
Examples of specialists in medical profession are pathologists, epidemiologists, virologists, pediatricians, orthopedic doctors, radiologists, ophthalmologists, gynecologists and many more.
In chaplaincy, chaplains undergo specialized training and studies after general chaplaincy studies regarding the areas of specialization and fields of their choices. They are called specialists professional chaplains.
Examples of specialist chaplains are health care chaplains (which involves hospital chaplaincy, hospice and palliative care chaplaincy, mental health care, one need to specialize in one of them.), clinical psychotherapists or psychospirituotherapists, critical incidents and emergency management, dispute/conflict resolution, marriage/family chaplaincy, education/school chaplaincy, correctional service chaplaincy, police chaplaincy, military chaplaincy, chaplaincy educator etc.
There are open widows for all chaplains to specialize in any area or field of chaplaincy but such chaplains must understand that they have to start their practices as General Practioners before advancing to their areas of specialty.
Commence your professional now as you engage in professional chaplaincy training and education, earn enough units of CCPE and be prepared to approach the professional body for certification.

Becoming Distinguished and Different Via Restructuring of Chaplaincy Education Curriculum

Becoming Distinguished and Different Via Restructuring of Chaplaincy Education Curriculum
The intention of Archbishop Prof. Mike-Jacobs JP and chaplaincy institute under his leadership watch is to make you different and be distinguished chaplain amongst other chaplains of yours and also make your chaplaincy organizations unique and different from others around you.
He is also committed to help you keep abreast of what is happening and new developments in chaplaincy profession, practice and service delivery. Praise God!
In line with what has been said above, there was a question posted on the platform of our international collaborators which is reproduced here for us to showcase the happenings globally and make us follow the trend of things in our world if we want to remain relevant in our situations, chaplaincy profession and in societies of our world.
The Questions:
What chaplaincy school, college or institution can I attend that will make me a qualified chaplain to;
1.     Prevent suicide, suicidal thoughts and suicidal actions?
2.     Attend to drug addicts and proffer solutions to their problems?
3.      Attend to victims’ abuses and offer profitable solutions to problems arising from all forms of abuse?
4.     Attend to people who have difficulties in life, helping them to navigate through such difficulties?
5.     Provide the needed spiritual care for all and sundry?
Others as may be specified later on.
Answer:
The answer provided by our international collaborators will be found summarized and provided below:
“Get to a good chaplaincy school, college or institute that has a comprehensive curriculum where courses of your interest are incorporated, obtain a first degree and acquire 1 or 2 CPE Units, then you are done.”
In line with the summarized answer; PRODAM-J Chaplaincy Concept and Institute is committed to giving you world standard chaplaincy education curriculum and training which will make chaplains your organization different and unique from others around you.
The chaplaincy training and education we had in the past was grossly inadequate, as you can see, we had to break new grounds to be relevant and we have to give ourselves to learning new things all the time.
You have already commenced or started a distinguished and different journey by the study, and surely you are going to land safely.
Give more time to learning new things and showcase your difference and uniqueness.

There are many ways of Reaching Out to People with Something

There are many ways of Reaching Out to People with Something
Beloved, there are numerous ways of reach out to people and introducing to them in life whatever we employ in this service; the primary goals of reaching out to people must not be thrown overboard or abandoned.
Examples:
1.     In mission, we employ medical mission to reach out to communities and people groups to introduce to them someone they have been lacking in their lives, such as the gospel and endeavoring to establish a community of believers amongst the people. No matter what medical services we offer, this primary objective must be uphold.
2.     Hydro-engineering mission, this is also called water engineers, may desire to reach out to communities and people groups on hydro-engineering mission to introduce or take to them portable water which had not been in existence in such community before.
The engineers will also be demonstrating their professional fits in the production of portable water by drilling boreholes for the admiration of the people in such community.
3.     Chaplaincy outreach, practicing professional chaplains can equally take chaplaincy practice and service delivery on mission to communities and people groups, employing whatever methods they consider suitable for the exploit.
Whatever method employed, the primary task of taking chaplaincy practice and service delivery to the people must never be jettisoned or abandoned. The colourful uniforms worn by chaplains in this part of the planet earth had served as an instrument of attraction bringing people to chaplaincy; but without establishing them in chaplaincy duties and practices.
People want to go further than uniforms. This is the challenge of the moment in Nigeria.

Who is a Chaplain?

Who is a Chaplain?
This question becomes necessary because chaplaincy is gaining precedent daily in the continent of Africa, and everyone is calling him/herself a chaplain even when they are far from the truth.
Dictionary definition is also grossly inadequate to compound the problem. I have therefore taken it upon myself as a stakeholder in chaplaincy profession, a practicing professional chaplain, a certified pastoral counselor, clinical psychotherapist and certified chaplaincy educator in private practice to give an adequate answer to who a chaplain is?
1.     A chaplain is one who has a calling into chaplaincy and has accepted to make chaplaincy his/her choice profession; practicing chaplaincy and offering chaplaincy services to the general public.
2.     Chaplain as a clergy man or woman who has the endorsement of his/her faith leaders or religious leaders to minister to people of different religions and faith (as interfaith minister) outside the faith or religious setting to provide pastoral care services to the general public.
3.     A chaplain may be a trained or untrained chaplain.
4.     A chaplain may also be a professional chaplain or para-professional or nonprofessional.
5.     A chaplain may be a volunteer chaplain or a regular chaplain.
6.     A chaplain may be a human chaplain, providing chaplaincy care services to human beings in various sector of the world’s economy such as
i.        Health care chaplain which include hospital, hospice home, palliative care hone etc.
ii.      Mental health chaplain.
iii.    Couples chaplain.
iv.   Family chaplain.
v.     Critical incident chaplain which include crisis and disaster management.
vi.   Pediatric chaplain.
vii. Workplace chaplain which include business, market place, industries etc.
viii.  Political chaplain which include political parties, people in political parties, people in government both federal, state, local govt. etc.
ix.       Faith group or denominational chaplain.
x.         Education chaplain which include nursery, primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions, etc.

Billable Services

                                                         Billable Services
In the service industry, and all professions found in service industries, there are billable and non-billable services.
Beloved chaplains in Nigeria and by extension continent of Africa, I stand to let you know that chaplaincy services are billable services. Professional services everywhere in the world are billable. It is therefore an error of judgement classifying chaplaincy services as non-billable.
This is the more reason why we have been advocating “chaplaincy practice in for-profit setting” and we have also been calling all chaplains to release themselves for professional chaplaincy training which will make qualify to offer billable services to people.
This training is far beyond mere physical exercise, matching and parade drills which makes chaplains physically fit for the assignment to be given to them. Come one, come all for this specialized professional chaplaincy training and be qualified to for billable chaplaincy services in your various communities.
Please not that chaplains for reasons may decide to offer non-billable services to the public out of their own volition such as becoming:
a.     Volunteer chaplains after retirement from active services, but now offering volunteer services.
b.     When reaching out with professional chaplaincy practice to the public or organization before acceptance and recognition is granted.
c.      In emergency situations, when it will be foolery for any professional to negotiate remuneration and fee for services.
Whatever services chaplains offer in such situation may be classified as non-billable services.
Billable services is defined as
While non-billable is

This You MUST Know as Professional Chaplain

This You MUST Know as Professional Chaplain
Although we are not medical professionals or not all chaplains are in the health care system – you need to know these terminologies in case you become health care chaplain.
1.     Isolation: a situation of been alone; a state of separated from others and group; an act of disconnection, detachment, segregation, loneliness and solitude.
Isolated persons are usually prevented from being visited by family members, loved ones and friends. Only professionals who offer them care are allowed to reach out to them with PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).
2.     Quarantine: Isolated for health reasons; enforced isolation of people suffering from contagious diseases in order to prevent the spread; a placement into compulsory isolation for medical reasons.
3.     ICU: Intensive care unit – a hospital unit, started to provide intensive care to patients or people whose stability health wise is in danger, only health care professionals are allowed in this setting
How can Chaplains provide services to these set of people?
Isolated people: Chaplains in the health care system or hospitals, if considered essential workers by the management will be provided with PPE, and they will be allowed to minister to the patients in ISO. They will start with offering of the ministry of presence.
However, where the hospital management does not consider chaplains to be essential workers , ministry of presence is ruled off, but chaplains will only be able to offer services digital means such as online services (tele-chaplaincy services, phone calls, video calls etc).
ICU: Because of the seriousness and the unstable conditions of patients in ICU, only specialized health care professionals are allowed into this special unit of the hospital. However, when the health conditions of patients in ICU becomes stable and are moved out of the ICU to the wards, chaplains may be allowed to reach out to them with their services. Our preparedness to get trained in the right direction will offer us the opportunity to serve better. Chaplaincy practice is not an imagination or guess work.
When Death occurs: Beloved chaplains, when death occurs, for it sometimes does; patient’s parish priest, pastor or Imam are unable to reach their parishoners who are in isolation for burial rights as hospital management have instruction from government and authorities in charge of health not to release such bodies for burial to the family members to prevent contagious disease from spreading to others.
However, if there are staff chaplains amongst the health care team or in the hospital or working NCDC, they may be able to arrange with the religious cleric of the patient to offer final burial rights via digital means.
Hospital management, especially NCDC in pandemic situations are vested with the responsibility of disposing the deceased who in ISO center during treatment for control of the pandemic or epidemic.
Proper training and education is unavoidable as we may be asking for what does not obtain.
Mental Health Problems: There are various mental health problems quarantined people or ISO-patients experience such as stress, distress, frustration, hopelessness, depression, suicidal thoughts and action, loneliness, separation, segregation, stigmatization, boredom etc.
Chaplains who have been trained in mental health chaplaincy practice are the most suitable to offer the needed care to these people suffering from mental health problems using psychotherapy, psycho-spirituotherapy, spirituotherapy etc. via digital means as physical presence  seem difficult in pandemic situations.
Various programmes may be designed for them by chaplains individually and collectively to meet their needs and reduce their pains and problems.
I wish to emphasis here again the importance of proper and specialized training, which happens to be the borderline factor in effective chaplaincy and spiritual care service delivery.
We must be confident that we know what to do before asking to be given responsibility by the government. Chaplaincy practice is serious business.

Pain

Although pain is detested by everyone in life and remain undesired, yet pain has made itself universal in the sense it appears in every situation, culture, in people of all colours, religions, gender and political leanings.
What are the various situations pain is experienced in Life?
1.     In grieving, pain is experienced.
2.     In heart breaks, pain is experienced.
3.     In disappointment, pain is experienced.
4.     In bereavement, pain is experienced.
5.     In hardship, pain is experienced.
6.     In poverty, pain is experienced.
7.     In failure, pain is experienced.

10.                        In divorce, pain is experienced.
11.                        In any kind of loss, pain is experienced.
12.                        In disastrous situations, pain is experienced.
The list is unending, pain surfaces in every endeavours of life.
NB: pain although universal in scope and nature also vary. We therefore have the following categories of pain to attend to as professionals in situations where our clients find themselves.
1.     Physical pains including body pains, joint pains, pain as a result of sickness/illness, pain caused by overworking (fatigue).

Disappointment

Disappointment
At various times in life’s journeys, people get disappointed in others, things life’s situations etc. disappointment has no respect for gender, age, or status. Disappointment is a state of dissatisfaction, and frustration. It comes or occurs when one’s expectations are not met such as;
a.     Expectations in marriage.
b.     Expectations in life.
c.      Expectations in business or profession.
d.     Expectations by one’s family.
e.     Expectations in parents and children.
Disappointment usually comes with grieving, sorrows, pain, frustration and depression which may also leads unto other complications.
Because of the devastating effects disappointment has upon people, professional chaplains are encouraged to learn how to provide the needed care for people who have experienced disappointments in life or people who are grieving and sorrowing because of disappointment. In this way chaplains give meaning to people’s lives.
NB: Disappointment has been found to be the major source of unhappiness, frustration, depression, suicide, murder etc., especially disappointment in relationships, marital disappointment or business disappointment.
Only professionals who have been adequately trained and equipped to offer services to people who are frustrated and disappointed in life and will be able to say to people to use every disappointment as a stepping stone to a greater height.

Two Ways

Two Ways

In accordance with the biblical saying: “two ways – the wide gate and the narrow gate.” So also, I have come to discovery of the fact that there are two ways (2 ways) in life.
The way of “deception” – broad, wide and very busy with human regular activities and the way of “truth” – narrow, tight, not too busy with human regular activities, few people trod on this way.  This way of truth is unique, different and distinguished from the other way – the way of deception.
Way one is the way of deception characterized by ignorance, confusion, mediocrity, dishonesty, distortion, faking of the original concept, unprofitableness at the end, pollution, falsehood, distortion, lack moral standard, cheap popularity, social vices etc.
Way two is the way of truth characterized by sincerity, honesty, trust worthiness, high moral standard, high education and literacy, decency, dignity, nobility, love, life sharing, professionalism, commitment, thoroughness etc.
Please evaluate yourself to know what of the two ways you have chosen to trip upon and you are trodden upon.

Promoting Chaplaincy Practice Per Excellence

Promoting Chaplaincy Practice Per Excellence
Beloved chaplains, we at Association of Professional Chaplains and Prodam-J Chaplaincy Concept are poised to promoting professional chaplaincy practice per excellence as there is nothing short of that.
As far as we are concerned, we are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that chaplaincy practice per excellence make our profession  known to the general public which will earn us the right recognition we have been desiring.
The quality of service we offer the public as chaplains must be that that can earn us good respect, dignity and acceptance by the public. The how of service delivery must be that which will make beneficiaries to refer us to others.
This is not an era where any chaplain will have nothing to offer the public and still be happy to call him/herself a chaplain. Chaplaincy practice per excellence is unavoidable.
Let all of us arise and provide for global best chaplaincy practice and service delivery.

Healthy Competition

Healthy Competition
We are in a competitive world, where healthy competition is not only rewarding but beneficial and enhances advancement in life. For example:
We have four major network providers in Nigeria make international connectivity possible such as MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile. They are made to operate under the same laws and regulations, yet each one of them uniquely positioned itself to offer beneficial services that will engender them to the general public and their customers.
Example 2: We have various radio stations in various locations of our nation and some national radio stations, some state owned radio stations while some are community radio stations, all established for the same purpose and governed by the simple laws and regulations.
Because of the fact that they are more to function in a competitive world and situation, each radio station has to design her own programmes offering unique services to the same people and public creatively.  Each radio station, uniquely positioned itself to attract people to its programmes and endeavor to make more listeners and keep its listeners.
NB: Chaplaincy which present herself with many dimensions and diversities also provide a suitable platform or enabling environments for chaplaincy organizations to offer various chaplaincy activities and services to the people in a competitive world. Practicing chaplains must of necessity learn to offer beneficial services to people in a way that will engender them and their services among other helping professionals.
Professional chaplains will be expected to innovatively and creatively position themselves to offer unique services that will make them excel in their chosen profession “Chaplaincy.”

Preparing Chaplains for Future Assignments after this Pandemic

Preparing Chaplains for Future Assignments after this Pandemic
Professional chaplaincy and service delivery requires proactive thinking and strategic planning. Fire brigade approach has never profited any one or profession.
Since the World War II, and about the year 1940-1945, corona virus pandemic outbreak has been unimaginable surge ravaging the entire world. It has place the world in a tragic catastrophic situation.
If we survive the corona virus pandemic, the surviving people and the world will be left with numerous traumas and unimaginable problems which will require professional interventions and solutions.
This informs this preparation of chaplains for greater assignment at the aftermath of this pandemic. Chaplains must be prepared now for the future. Interested chaplains should contact Chap. Prof. Mike David.
Envisage problems and challenges that may bedevil the world at the end of corona virus pandemic:
Beloved chaplains, if corona virus pandemic comes to an end and the world is free from is free from its ravaging effects, the survivors will be bedeviled with numerous problems and challenges which will require intervention and therapeutic considerations from professionals. Such problems and challenges as envisaged are as follows:
1.     What will remain of the nations of the world will be a wreckage which will require restructuring, repositioning and rebuilding in all aspects. Interdisciplinary professionals will be required to take or bring a new world out of the wreckages that will be left behind by this pandemic.
2.     Systems that ruled the present world would have been completely ruined, requiring that new system be put in place. This also will present new challenges to interdisciplinary professionals, system analysts and problem solvers who will be faced with the problems of putting in place new systems.
3.     There will be a new race for supremacy amongst nations in the new world that will emerge from the wreckages of this present world – requiring professional international politicians to have a free day.
4.     World economy is envisaged to be in shambles, total ruins requiring economic experts to put the economy back in place.
5.     The pandemic survivors will have problems of unemployment and social vices will be on the high rate requiring professionals in work and labour matters to have enough to chew.
6.     The emerging world from the pandemic will be highly indebted requiring experts to de-negotiate debts, loans, etc.
7.     The survivors of the pandemic will experience poverty, highly indebted seeking professionals that will bring them out of poverty. Here chaplains will be best suited in assisting the people who survive the pandemic.
8.     Numerous health problems will be left behind for the emerging world and survivors of the pandemic, keeping health professionals on their toes to help find solutions to the forth coming health issues after this pandemic.
9.     Survivors will be left with numerous mental health problems requiring the intervention and care of mental health professionals such mental health doctors and nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health chaplains.
10.                        The survivors of this pandemic will be left with many psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual problems requiring the services of professionals in the help and care ministry such as psychiatrists, psychologists, psycho-spirituotheraspist, spirituotherapists.
11.                        The survivors of this pandemic will be left with a disintegrated family system and a complete ruins of the family will emerge, which will call for professional family doctors and family chaplains for intervention and for solving the pending problems envisaged in families after this pandemic in the emerging world.
12.                        The emerging world and survivors of this pandemic will be left with religious problems and confusion as the present world religions have failed to meet with the felt needs of their adherents especially in the establishment of unity and peaceful co-existence to the people in this present world, calling for interfaith, multifaith ministers and chaplains and interreligious harmony.
13.                        The devastating effect of the pandemic will give rise to a lot of environmental problems will affect the planet earth, the soil, the vegetation, birds and animals requiring environmental experts, Eco chaplains and environmental chaplains to provide the needed solutions to such problems.
There will be a new drive for survivors of this pandemic to shun arrogance and pride, humbling themselves to turn to their Creator, God; giving Him His rightful place in their lives, their affairs, allowing Him to rule in the affairs of men; worshiping Him in truth and spirit. The worship of men, money and material wealth has failed this present world woefully.
