The View of
a Clinical Psycho-spirituo Therapist, Prof. Mike-Jacobs JP on the Incessant and
Astronomical Increase in the Rate of Suicide in the Nation and Society.
Many people in our society and nation are presently passing
through hardship and difficulties in life. However, such difficulties and
hardship usually lead people into crisis, frustration, uncertainty and finally
depression which is a sure way to suicide.
Factors that
help to trigger suicide:
I wish to classify such functions to the following
categories:
a. Social
factors: Such as high rate of
unemployment, bad governance, hardship.
b. Economic
factors: Such as bad economic
policies of government, economic hardship, unpaid salaries and wages,
indebtedness, high rate of interest on loan.
c. Psychological
factors: Such as frustration,
unresolved crisis and conflict, unmet expectations, anxiety, depression.
d. Emotional
factors: Such as unhealed hurting,
disappointment, insatiable desires, isolation, relational problems.
e. Environmental
factors: Such as peer pressure, high
rate of social vices, high rate of drug consumption.
f. Health
factors: Such as sudden discovery of
terminal illness, sudden discovery of HIV/AID, sudden accident which lead to
loss of limps, making one become liability.
Remedies:
The only remedy for suicide and suicidal actions is
prevention in nature. I want to state here very categorically that curative
remedy for suicide or suicide action is non-existence. Once we allow suicide to
take place without preventing it, that particular life is lost and can never be
restored.
NB: In attending to suicidal people with the intention
of preventing suicide or suicidal actions the followings must be put in place:
1.
Psycho-social
therapeutic centers by professional clinical psychotherapists,
spirituotherapists, psychologists, professional counselors, professional
chaplains etc, where people and the public can access the needed intervention,
counseling therapeutic treatments to issues leading to suicide.
2.
Government must
assist professionals in assessing loans and funding for such psycho-social
centers.
3.
Bank of
industries, central bank and World Bank should come to the aid of professionals
who are prepared to set up centers for the prevention of suicide and suicidal
actions in the society and the nation at large.
4.
Government must
reduce drastically the rate of youth’s unemployment.
5.
Government should
put in place good economic policies that will enable businesses of the masses
to thrive and pay salaries and wages as at when due.
6.
Government should
encourage and provide good business environments for people to venture into.
In
conclusion, I wish to challenge all
clinical psychotherapists, spirituotherapists, psychologists, professional
counselors, professional chaplains etc, in this nation to rise up to their
responsibilities of providing needed care, attention and services to people in
preventing suicide and suicidal actions in people as well as making needed
contributions when they are requested to speak on suicide and suicidal actions.
Some of the contributions we got from non-professionals
in the public are absurd. How can setting ablaze suicidal victim ablaze help to
prevent suicide? Link up with-
