Reasons for
the Existence of Known Professions of our world and that of the Practicing
Professionals
All known professions of our world are in existence to
fulfill specific visions and professional mandates to make life better for the
teaming population of our world. For a better understanding, let us consider
some of these known and notable professions one after the other.
1. Farming or
Agricultural profession. Farming or
agricultural profession which happens to be the first profession and endowed
humanity by the Almighty God. The agricultural profession came into existence
to fulfill the vision of God for food, sufficiency in all nations of the world,
while the professionals practisioners called farmers or agriculturalists have
the professional mandate to preserve nature, till the earth or cultivate the
land; make preparations for an increase yield of the earth to ensure food
sufficiency and security in our world.
2. Medical
profession. Medical profession came
into existence to ensure that the precious life granted Humanity by God is not
ridiculed in any way or wasted nor cut short. The sanctity of life and
sacredness of such life is the concern of medical profession; while medical
practioners have the mandate to safeguard and preserve the God-given life, they
seek to find cure to sicknesses and diseases that threatens to end such life.
They also enjoy the professional mandate to resuscitate life that is about
going out of mankind.
3. Clerical or
Priestly profession. In all known
religions of our world, there is a special positions for their priests, imam,
rabbi and clergies. Most of these known religions in our world are in existence
to ensure that there is a close relationship with the Almighty God their
Creator, deities and all mankind. These professional priests, imams, rabbi and
clergies enjoy their mandates to direct all people to God, deities and supreme
beings who have power to rule and reign in the affairs of mankind. These
professionals also have the mandate to offer and conduct religious services to
people of their faith and religions with the intention of obtaining favour for
their faithful from God and other deities.
4. Engineering
profession. The engineering
profession is in existence to ensure the provision of engineering services in
all sectors of the economy and facets of life. Professional engineers enjoy the
professional mandate of providing solution based approach to all engineering
problems that contend with mankind. They also enjoy professional mandate to
design, and re-design engineering tools and projects for the advancement of
engineering profession.
5. Chaplaincy
profession. Chaplaincy profession
came into existence to showcase the love of God to humanity regardless of
status, gender, religion, colour, tribe and sexual orientation. The chaplaincy
professional practioners have the professional mandate to be concerned with the
provision of equitable justice, equal opportunities for all, and having concern
for the vulnerable groups in various societies of our world to ensure
productivity of all people.
Practicing professional chaplains have the mandate to
stand against all evils that may want to truncate the life granted people by
God. They enjoy the professional mandate of providing spiritual, emotional,
psychological, and physical and environment care to people who are bewildered
with one problem or the other.
They have the mandate to provide the needed solution
based approach to all problems of humanity with the views of making people
operate at optimal capacity. They enjoy professional mandate to provide end of
life care to terminally ill and people waiting to cross over to the world
beyond.
6. The military
profession. The military profession
came into existence to defend the sovereign integrity of nations of our world
against external and internal aggressors, to offer the needed protection to the
people and properties of citizenry as well as defend the peaceful coexistence
of the nations they serve. The serving military men and women have the
professional mandate to work for the security of their nations at all times.
Here is a clarion call again from me for all chaplains
to come to the understanding that there is a sure need for a reformation of
chaplaincy in the light of contemporary settings. A redefining, restructuring,
repositioning and representing chaplaincy in Nigeria and continent of Africa.
The present yarning and agitations of our people in
Nigeria is the calling for restructuring, there can therefore be no better time
than now for the redefining, restructuring, repositioning and representing
chaplaincy.
