Professionalizing
Chaplaincy in Nigeria
Only early 20th century did chaplaincy
attained a professional status in the world since its existence. For many
centuries before 20th century, chaplaincy was a mere occupation;
after passing through several processes, definite patterns and procedures,
chaplaincy attained the status of a profession. Praise God!
Domesticating this in Nigeria and continent of Africa
should not pose any serious problem; but we must come to an understanding that
professionalizing chaplaincy in Nigeria and Africa at large is beyond mere
imagination and wishful thinking.
It is a serious academic concern requiring academic
pursuit before a mere occupation can graduate to a professional status. There
are sure processes to follow and the first and foremost step in such process is
“functionality.”
Let us all who feel concerned about professionalizing
chaplaincy in this part of the world to take chaplains functionality serious.
