Depression: The Most Ravaging Killer in the World

Permit me to describe depression, which is also called the most dangerous monster of our age as follows:-

1.     An emotional and psychological problem capable of leading to more truncating and social vices.

2.     A state of instability, emotionally and psychologically too.

3.     An eroding of one’s emotional stability and equilibrium.

4.     An hopeless situation which makes people suffering depression to query the existence of God.

5.     Depression is a such a defilement in life which makes people suffered depression to have no meaning in life, and make them feel that life itself is worthless and partial.

From these definition and descriptions of mine, you can see how deadly depression and depressive situations have been.

Is Depression Criminal? My answer to this question is capital No, but depression, if left unattended to left untreated is capable of leading to criminal activities such as suicide as far as the law of the land.

Are people of any age grade free from Depression? My answer is capital No, as even infants are also prone to depression. If infants who are in the dispensation of innocence are vulnerable, the teenagers, youths and adults are not free from the pangs of depression.

What symptoms can you see in people which will suggest to you that such persons may be suffering depression?

a.     An awkward kind of feeling and strange behavior which is different from what is known about such person before.

b.     A strange feeling of inadequacy, failures and unsatisfaction with life.

c.      Feeling of worthlessness, hopelessness and despair, the thought of one’s life coming to end.

Is Depression Preventable? My answer in this case is Yes. Depression can be prevented with the help of professionals who are proactive and prepared to salvage victims from this monster called depression by offering counseling interventions and psychospiritual therapy as tool.

If depression has already set in, can it be treated and by whom? Depression, even when it has set in can be treated by professional chaplains who have been trained as counselors and psychospiritual therapists as well.

NB: Although, depression is known to be a psychological and emotional problems, the ravaging effects affect the physical and spiritual aspect of person calling for wholistic kind of care and treatment. This is why psycho-spiritual therapeutic treatment is the best option for treating depression.

Where can one obtain needed training in Nigeria and continent of Africa? Prodam-J chaplaincy concept and institute is the answer.

Hope and Approach by Chaplains

Hope literally means:

a.     The source of success.

b.     Confidence desired.

c.      An anticipation.

Apart from these definitions of hope given above and others I have not being mentioned; there is another side to hope in chaplaincy practice, chaplaincy care and service delivery.

“Can hope be given to another person who probably has lost hope, because of long time or terminal illness?”

In chaplaincy perspectives, hope is not an article, a commodity or a product that can be given to another. Professional chaplaincy practitioners especially those that offer palliative care services to terminally ill patients or care recipients have come to a discovery that hope cannot be given or transferred to another person. Why?

1.     Chaplains may hope together with care recipients or patients for better situation or tomorrow.

2.     Chaplains, especially palliative care chaplains can identify with their patients/care recipients to rekindle hopes in them for betterment, healing and recovery.

3.     Chaplains can pray and hope together with their care recipients for miracles and hope for such; as it is only God that has the power to make miracle things happen and healing is achieved.

4.     Patients or care recipients may sometimes say to chaplains, that they have a higher hope for healing and wellness than medical science and medication, in such situation, chaplains should encourage them to religiously follow their medical advice and take their medications as they patiently wait for higher hope for the healing and recovery.

While physicians may be angry to hear patients say that they have a higher hope than medical science; a bi-vocational chaplain who is a palliative care physician as well as palliative care chaplain will automatically lend support to such patients to achieve the desired goal.

Caution: As professional chaplaincy practitioners, we must learn not to reduce everything to prayers:

a.  There is a sure place for prayers for miracles.

b.  There is a place for medications.

c.   There must be a place for various therapies.

d.  There is a place for surgery.

e.  There is a place for palliative care services.

f.    There must be a place for chaplaincy care services.

g.  There must be a place for follow ups by chaplains.

Defenders of Human Rights

Chaplaincy profession seeks to guarantee that every human being created by God enjoys to the fullest, the life granted the individual by the creator God and also enjoys the rights granted all human beings undenied. This is what has given birth to the defense of human rights in chaplaincy.

Chaplains are therefore defenders of human rights in some countries in the world, and in our situation and case, chaplains who have been adequately trained and equipped especially those who are lawyers or come from legal background, are being trained to become chaplains defending the rights of people; the most vulnerable groups like children and down trodden in the society.

They will also be expected to stand for the defense of victims of abuses, victims of rape and sexual assaults, victims of human trafficking and slavery.

With the understanding we have of chaplaincy profession, mandating her professional practitioners to always seek to bring meaning to people’s lives or make their God-given lives meaningful, seeking to improve the living conditions of people.

Chaplains have an important role to play in defending the rights of people, even the fundamental rights of individuals against oppression and deliberative abuses from authorities or other people in life.

This calls for the needed training and preparation for chaplains which made us to seek collaboration with Chap. Victor Ramond and his organization for special training and equipping.

Because chaplains in his group and organization are already practicing as defenders of human rights in their own country as a specialty in the field of chaplaincy, we can learn from their experiences until we perfect our own service delivery here.

Chaplaincy is truly a multi-dimensional, multi-directional profession, very deep and wide requiring patience and tact to able to excel in its practice.

Chap. Victor Ramond and his organization will provide in this arrangement, the technical knowhow  to standing for human rights and also providing relevant courses while Prodam-J will provide the technical knowhow of providing needed chaplaincy care services to victims in actual chaplaincy practice. Courses that will be of assistance shall also be provided by Prodam-J

Home Care Service

Preamble: Home care services is beginning to gain more prominence amongst various interdisciplinary professional practitioners across the world, especially professionals who offer care services to people in various communities and chaplaincy profession and its professional practitioners are no exemptions.

Why is Home Care Services Gaining Ground and Advocated? There are various reasons why home care services is advocated and considered profitable such reasons may include:-

1.     Increased opportunity for service users to access and receive professional care services at the comfort of their homes or residence.

2.     Providing the needed opportunity for care recipients who have mobility problems and restrictions because of illness, old age or impairment to access needed professional care services in the comfort of their homes without needing to move from their homes to care centers.

3.     Well to do people who can conveniently pay for home care services, can employ professional care practitioners for needed services in their homes for the loved ones.

4.     Where professional practitioners are very scarce and readily unavailable, care recipients who are well-to-do can readily obtain needed care services in the comfort of their homes.

5.     Home care services also provide an enabling environment for care recipients to receive confidential services without them being unduly exposed to the general public. This however will depend on the type of care services needed.

What Professional Care Practitioners must Do in Offering Such Care Services?

1.     They must learn to demonstrate total compliance with professional standard of practice even though services are to be offered in homes and residences of the cared for.

2.     They must learn to demonstrate total compliance to the codes of ethics of chaplaincy profession in the discharge of their duties even though done away from practice centers or bases.

3.     They have to learn to abide with the codes of conducts for practicing chaplains and the point of service provision remains their legitimate duty posts.

4.     They are expected to demonstrate and show forth good professional behavior for acceptance and respect and needed trust.

5.     They must endeavor to build good relationship with care recipients and their families for public recognition and acceptance.

This is important for chaplaincy profession seeking relevance and public acceptance.

Home care service is a window of opportunity that practicing professional chaplains can employ to engage in professional chaplaincy practice and service delivery, making themselves available to offer chaplaincy care services to humanity publicly as well as privately.

Other interdisciplinary professionals have employed home care services to reach out to numerous clients of theirs such as:-

a.     In the education sector, we have home tutors or home teachers preparing students for national and international examinations.

b.     Nurses and midwives are also known to have employed home care services to reach out to their patients in their various homes.

c.      Some physicians, especially those who are still seeking to find their footings are known to be favourably disposed to home care services for them to earn needed recognition and trust.

Cost Effectiveness of Home Care Services: Home care service is cost effective as it eliminates to some extent, office or practice center investment; especially for young emerging care services providers who are yet to have established practice center and bases.

Existing practice centers seeking expansion can also employ the home care service method in offering needed care.

Wide Spectrum Home Care Services:

Preamble: There are occasions when professional care services are needed by professional practitioners, especially professional chaplains who have received authorization to practice as ‘General Chaplaincy Practitioners’ and not specialist practitioners.

Purpose: Purpose of this article is to sensitize professional chaplains to think of considering venturing into providing needed chaplaincy care and services to people in their homes for reasons best known to the practitioners, most especially those who are still battling with what to do in providing beneficial services to the public.

What were Home Care Service Entails?

1.     Provision of general chaplaincy care services to care recipients in their homes which does not require attention of specialist practitioners.

2.     Providing needed chaplaincy care services within the competence of chaplaincy profession.

3.     Making care provision readily available to the public in their homes.

4.     This kind of service is cost effective and less traumatic as care recipients remain in the comfort of their homes.

5.     In case of complications; chaplains have the right to make referral to appropriate professional or colleague.

Why Home Care Service is Suitable for the Aged, Old People and People with Disabilities and Impairments without Mobility?

With home care service these set of individuals can enjoy needed care services in the comfort of their homes and residence.

Conclusion: Home care services is a form of private professional chaplaincy practice that can be employed by qualified chaplains. if other interdisciplinary professionals have found this services profitable, why will professional chaplains feel differently.

Imbecility and How Chaplains can Manage People with Imbecility

Imbecility is known to be:

·        Amentia.

·        Total want of understanding.

·        Craziness.

·        The state of being broken in mind.

·        Weakness of intellect.

·        Dementia.

·        Total loss of thought and reason.

·        Feebleness of understanding or mind, particularly at old age.

·        Stupidity, foolishness (mona).

·        Retardation, more severe than moron, but not as severe as idiots.

Imbecile: This is known to be:

·        Destitute of strength either body or mind.

·        Feeble, impotent, especially mental weakness and feeble mindedness.

·        Impotent, one who is mentally or morally weak or insufficient (simpleton). For instance, at age 40, one has a mental age of 3-7 years.

Moron: This is known to be person of sub-normal intelligence.

Moronic: Having a mental age of between 7-12 year mental deficiency.

An Idiot: This is considered as:

·        An unlearned, ignorant or simple person, as distinguished from educated, an ignoramus.

·        A human being destitute of ordinary intellectual powers, whether congenital development or accidental.

·        Commonly a person without understanding from birth, a natural fool (simpleton).

·        A term of reproach.

Beloved chaplains, from our understanding of the various definitions above; we know imbecility comes in various shapes, shades and degrees. Some are more severe than others, and they can occur either as congenital deficits, developmental deficits or accidental deficits.

When imbecility of any degree has occurred, then comes our responsibilities as professional chaplains to help the parents or relation to manage them and give them meaning in life.

There is yet no known cure to imbecility medically, yet people who suffer from imbecility can be assisted to perform better, as we know they lack normal understanding and have weakness of intellect and reasoning.

NB: Giving them a task that will make them think beyond their powers is futility.

How then can they be assisted by Professional Chaplains?

1.     Tasks which they are expected to perform must be broken down for them by the care provider.

2.     Since they have mental and reasoning deficiencies; the care provider must be prepared to be their think-tank, thinking, reasoning and planning for their benefits in order to compensate for their intellectual weakness.

3.     The care providers must learn to shield them away from venturing into what is capable of making their conditions worse.

4.     Since total loss of memory is inclusive in imbecility, care providers must help to put in place what will remind people suffering from imbecility and dementia of what to do from time to time.

5.     Imbecility is an incurable weakness of the mind, intellect and reasoning, yet care providers have duties to make life better and more meaningful for them even in their predicament.

Imbecility of any degree whatsoever is not insanity and does not require the services of psychiatric doctors. It however requires the services, attention and concern of professional chaplains.

This care is done or carried out for a pay and economic purposes. This gives the care providers the opportunity to negotiate terms and pay before they begin to offer such services. This is not the kind of assignment volunteers go into for it is a lifelong assignment.

If you desire to become a professional chaplain offering people suffering from imbecility, get in contact with the institution below for needed equipping.
